Autopsies confirm gunshot wounds, suicide
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department announced Monday that autopsies determined all seven family members died from gunshot wounds, with Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, taking his own life. The fire, which broke out after the killings, appeared to have been intentionally set in multiple locations within the home, according to Capt. Jacob Sparks, who read a statement from Sheriff Eric DeBoer at a news conference. “This is an unspeakable tragedy that we may never completely understand,” DeBoer said. Authorities first received calls about a smoky smell in the area Monday morning but found nothing upon inspection. Her mother and stepfather, Becky and Steve Lawwill, described her as “a kind and devoted soul who loved her family and her students.” In a statement, they said: “We treasured every moment we had with her and her six children, and words cannot adequately address our devastation… we pray for God’s peace and comfort as we grieve their deaths and honor their lives.” The six children ranged in age from 5 to 15. The couple had three biological sons, adopted two daughters, and had another biological son, according to Mandy’s blog.
Kristopher Karolkiewicz’s background
Kristopher Karolkiewicz had served as vice president of sales and marketing for the American Heart Association from September 2023 until earlier this month, when his employment ended. The AHA declined to provide further details, citing personnel privacy. He worked remotely on its CPR and first aid training division. In a 2019 Facebook post, he celebrated his 10th wedding anniversary, writing, “I’m a very lucky guy.” The couple met while working at a beverage company in 2008 and married in August 2009.
