The Students' Union Government (SUG) of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) has directed all students to observe a peaceful sit-at-home on Monday, August 3, 2026, in response to the recent increase in school fees by the institution's management. The directive was announced in a statement issued on Sunday, following what the union described as unsuccessful engagements with the management over the reviewed fees.
Union's Statement and Leadership
The statement was signed by the Students' Union President, Afolabi Temitope, alongside the Acting Speaker, Olorode Kehinde, General Secretary, Ekundayo Gbenga, and Public Relations Officer, Oloyede Ganiyu. It revealed that the union had held a series of consultations with the management since the revised fees appeared on the students' portal.
According to the union, it consistently maintained that the welfare and interests of students must remain paramount in every decision affecting their academic pursuits. The statement read: "Consequently, after careful deliberation, the Students' Union Government hereby directs all MAPOLY students to observe a peaceful sit-at-home on Monday, 3rd August, 2026, as a demonstration of our collective dissatisfaction with the recent increase in school fees and a call for further reconsideration by the appropriate authorities."
Nature of the Protest
The union emphasized that the planned action is intended as a peaceful demonstration of students' grievances and should not be seen as a call for violence, vandalism, intimidation, or any activity that could undermine the peace and image of the institution. Students are urged to remain calm, orderly, and law-abiding throughout the protest, avoid clashes with staff, security personnel, and fellow students, and rely solely on official updates from the Students' Union Government.
In a significant move, the union also called on shuttle operators, commercial drivers, tricycle riders, and other transport providers serving the polytechnic community to halt operations within and around the campus in support of the demonstration. This is aimed at amplifying the impact of the protest while maintaining its peaceful nature.
Dialogue and Future Engagements
Reaffirming its preference for dialogue, the union said discussions with the institution's management remain ongoing, stressing that the protest does not signal a breakdown in negotiations. The statement added: "This directive does not signify the end of engagement with the Management. Rather, it is a demonstration that while dialogue continues, the collective concerns of MAPOLY students cannot be overlooked."
