At least 12 people have been killed and nine others injured in a mass shooting that occurred in Johannesburg, South Africa. The tragic incident took place on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at an informal settlement in the Cleveland area of the city.
Details of the Attack
According to police reports, approximately 10 heavily armed suspects stormed the Jumpers Informal Settlement, opening fire on residents before fleeing the scene in a white vehicle. The shooting may be linked to a turf war between groups of illegal miners residing in the area.
The police have launched a manhunt for the suspects. In a statement issued on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, the police department confirmed that officers responded to a complaint of a shooting in progress at around 23:10 local time (21:10 GMT). Emergency medical services were dispatched to treat the injured.
It is alleged that the suspects were dropped off by a white Toyota Quantum near a petrol station in Cleveland. They entered the informal settlement through both entrances, moving through the area and firing at residents and community members at multiple locations before fleeing in the same vehicle.
