A woman was paraded by members of her community for allegedly taking her married daughter to get an abortion. The incident occurred in Ihunowere, Nsukka, Enugu State.
Shame Walk Through the Community
In videos shared online, the woman is seen with palm fronds tied around her waist while holding a gong. She walked around the community announcing what she had done. As she made the announcement, people screamed in shock and booed her. Her daughter also walked alongside her during the walk of shame.
Reason Behind the Abortion
According to reports, the woman's daughter married last year. When Christmas came, her husband did not give anything to her family. When Easter came, he also did not send foodstuff to her family. The woman confronted her son-in-law, who explained that he was financially down and could not afford to give them food items.
The woman reportedly then sent for her married daughter to come home. She returned pregnant, and her mother allegedly took her to get an abortion. The woman admitted to this while being paraded around the community by Ihunowere youths.
Community Punishment
According to Tower FM Nsukka, the mother was ordered to pay the son-in-law 1 million naira for damages and perform funeral rites for the aborted baby.
