Murder Trial Moved After Cat Invades Zimbabwe Courtroom

A murder trial at the Bulawayo High Court in Zimbabwe was forced to move to a different courtroom after an uninvited feline guest entered the space and refused to leave, creating an unusual and chaotic scene.

Unexpected Intruder Disrupts Proceedings

The strange incident occurred during a special court session on June 3, 2026, when a stray brown cat slowly walked into the courtroom and let out a loud, mournful wail. The interruption was so severe that the judge had to pause the hearing and order the animal's removal.

Comical Attempts to Remove the Cat

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), four police officers, four prison guards, and a caretaker were called in to handle the situation. What followed was described as a comical scene, as the cat darted across the room, moving from behind the defendant's dock to the judge's bench, where it eventually hid underneath. The growing audience of onlookers at the door only worsened the cat's apparent stage fright.

Cat's Hostile Takeover

After several failed attempts to force the cat out, court officials decided to abandon the courtroom entirely. The NPAZ noted that the cat successfully executed a hostile takeover, leading to the relocation of the trial to another room.

Murder Trial Continues

The disruption occurred during the trial of Bright Tshuma, a 19-year-old from Nkulumane in Bulawayo, who was charged with murder. Despite the chaos, the trial resumed in a different courtroom. Tshuma was accused of stabbing a man to death with a Colombia CCCP AK47 knife. After a full trial, the court found him guilty and sentenced him to 20 years in prison.

Uninvited Cat Steals the Show

Although the murder case reached a conclusion, the stray cat became the main story of the day. The incident, which forced court officials, security personnel, and onlookers to deal with one of the strangest interruptions in a Zimbabwean courtroom in years, has been widely discussed and shared.
