NAFDAC Confirms BON Bread Manufacturer Complies with Regulatory Standards
NAFDAC: BON Bread Complies with Regulatory Standards

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has confirmed that Food & Food Integrated Company Limited, the manufacturer of BON Bread, operates in full compliance with regulatory standards following an investigation into public concerns about the product's extended shelf life.

The investigation was triggered by a social media claim on April 13, 2026, which alleged that a loaf of bread remained free from mold for over two months. Although the complainant did not specify the brand, the manufacturer of BON Bread publicly acknowledged that the product in question was theirs and described the allegation as misleading.

NAFDAC's Scientific Investigation

In response to the online concerns, NAFDAC promptly initiated a scientific investigation to establish the facts. In a statement released on Sunday, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NAFDAC, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, disclosed that the agency conducted an inspection of the company's bakery facility located in Abuja. Bread samples were collected from both the production site and the open market for laboratory analysis.

Findings from Laboratory Analysis

The findings revealed that the bread contained calcium propionate, an approved preservative commonly used in bread production. The levels of this preservative were within the permissible limits specified by the Codex Alimentarius, the internationally recognized food standards framework. Professor Adeyeye further stated that the laboratory analysis confirmed that the bread samples did not contain any objectionable substances, including bromate or non-nutritive sweeteners.

Regulatory Compliance History

NAFDAC also verified that the company has maintained regulatory compliance since it began operations in 2006. It has successfully undergone several license renewals without incurring penalties or facing product recalls. The agency therefore assured the public that Food & Food Integrated Company Limited is not in violation of any NAFDAC regulation.

Public Assurance and Call for Vigilance

NAFDAC encouraged members of the public to report any concerns relating to regulated products through any NAFDAC office nationwide or by calling the agency's call center. This will enable prompt and evidence-based investigation of complaints, ensuring continued consumer safety.
