The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted a consignment of cocaine cleverly concealed inside phone chargers that were destined for Saudi Arabia. The agency's spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, made the announcement on Sunday via a post on X (formerly Twitter), accompanied by a video showing the modified chargers and the hidden drugs.
How the drugs were discovered
According to Babafemi, the traffickers attempted to disguise the illegal substances as ordinary phone accessories, but the NDLEA officers were not deceived. The video shows operatives dismantling the plastic casings of the chargers to reveal carefully packaged wraps of cocaine hidden within the internal compartments.
“On the surface value, these are phone chargers but @ndlea_nigeria officers won’t fall for that. Concealed in there are consignments of cocaine going to Saudi Arabia,” Babafemi stated in his post.
Warning to Nigerians
The NDLEA spokesperson used the opportunity to reiterate the agency's long-standing advisory to Nigerians about the dangers of accepting parcels or luggage from others without knowing their exact contents. “This is why we keep warning people not to help anyone deliver any parcel or luggage on their face value because of the desperation by traffickers,” he emphasized.
The agency has consistently warned that drug traffickers are becoming increasingly desperate and creative in their attempts to smuggle narcotics out of Nigeria. This latest seizure is another reminder of how they hide drugs inside everyday items to beat security checks.
Past seizures and ongoing efforts
Over the years, NDLEA has intercepted illicit drugs concealed in food items, household products, clothing, vehicle parts, and other seemingly harmless objects. This shows how far drug syndicates are willing to go to avoid detection.
In a related incident, an Italy-based businessman was recently caught by NDLEA operatives after swallowing 98 wraps of cocaine before attempting to board a flight. These cases highlight the agency's vigilance and the severe penalties associated with drug trafficking, especially on international routes.
The NDLEA continues to advise Nigerians to be extra careful, warning that carrying a parcel for a friend, relative, or stranger without verifying its contents could lead to serious legal consequences. The agency remains committed to dismantling drug networks and curbing the illicit drug trade in Nigeria.
