The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has clarified that no Nigerian has been killed in the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa. The ministry's spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, made this known during an interview on Arise TV on Sunday, May 10.
Official Statement on Recent Attacks
Ebienfa acknowledged receiving disturbing videos from South Africa showing groups demanding that foreigners, particularly Black Africans, leave the country. He also confirmed that Nigerian-owned businesses have been affected by the ongoing protests. However, he emphasized that no Nigerian has lost their life as a direct result of these protests.
Previous Deaths in Police Custody
The spokesperson clarified that the two Nigerians who died in South Africa in April were not victims of the protests. According to Ebienfa, one died while in police detention, and the other was tortured in custody and later died in the hospital. These incidents occurred on April 21 and 25.
Diplomatic Engagement
Ebienfa revealed that the Ministry had a productive meeting with the South African consulate last week to discuss the safety of Nigerians in the country. He assured that the government is actively monitoring the situation and taking necessary steps to protect its citizens.
