The Ghana Police Service has arrested a Nigerian man, Augustine Okechuku Maazi, following a foiled robbery attempt on three banks in the Labone area of Accra. The arrest came after officers received intelligence about an impending attack and intercepted the suspects before they could strike.
Police act on intelligence to thwart bank heist
According to a statement from the Ghana Police Service, at approximately 10:45am on August 13, officers received intelligence that a gang of robbers was preparing to attack the GCB Bank, Ecobank, and Zenith Bank, all located in Labone. Police were immediately deployed to the area, where they spotted the gang members in vehicles parked close to the banks.
Upon sighting the police, one of the vehicles sped off in an attempt to escape. The police gave chase and arrested one suspect, Augustine Okechuku Maazi. The other occupant, however, managed to escape. Meanwhile, the robbers in a second vehicle also tried to flee, firing at officers. The police engaged them in a shootout, resulting in the deaths of two suspects.
Recovered items and ongoing investigation
The police recovered two vehicles: a Toyota Highlander with registration number GS-1434-18 and a Hyundai Tucson with registration number GS 7915-17, along with a blow pistol. The statement added that the Nigerian man is in custody assisting with the investigation.
The bodies of the deceased suspects have been deposited at the morgue for preservation, identification, and autopsy. The police have not yet released the identities of the deceased or the escaped suspect.
