Olukanyinsola Odebode, a 30-year-old Nigerian man, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison in the United Kingdom after being convicted of raping one woman and sexually assaulting another while on bail. The sentence was handed down at Swansea Crown Court on Friday, August 21, 2026, following a jury verdict finding him guilty of one count of rape and two counts of assault by penetration.
Court hears of humiliation and degradation
During the sentencing hearing, prosecutor Mark Wyeth KC described how Odebode “humiliated and degraded” his victims and recorded some of the sexual activity. Wyeth told the court: “He is a danger to females in the Wales and England areas. The defendant recorded and filmed some of the sexual activity. There were life-altering consequences for his victims.”
The defendant, of Gainsborough Road, Cefn Golau, Tredegar, had denied the allegations throughout his trial and continues to show a “lack of insight” into his offending, the court heard. Matthew Murphy, representing Odebode, who was described as “highly-educated,” asked the court to consider his client’s lack of any previous convictions.
Judge highlights threats and victim impact
Judge Huw Rees addressed the defendant regarding the first victim, stating: “You threatened her and said, ‘I’m going to ruin your life.’ That left her scared. She pleaded for you to stop but you persisted. She started to cry.” The victim described Odebode as a “predator.”
The judge added: “The effect on your victims has been profound. The probation report writer was struck by your lack of insight into your offending. You pose a significant risk to members of the public.”
Sentence breakdown and parole eligibility
For the first set of offences, Odebode was jailed for five years for the rape and a consecutive term of three years for the assault by penetration, making a sentence of eight years’ imprisonment. A consecutive term of 12 months was imposed for the assault by penetration of the second victim, resulting in a term of nine years.
As part of a sentence for the protection of the public, Judge Rees imposed a further three years on extended licence, bringing the total sentence to 12 years. Odebode will have to serve two-thirds of the custodial period of nine years before he is eligible for parole. He will also be required to register as a sex offender for life.
