Nigerian Woman Shares Story of Surviving Domestic Violence on 18th Anniversary
Nigerian Woman Shares Domestic Violence Survival Story

Chidindu Elijah, a Nigerian mother of three, has publicly shared her experience of surviving domestic violence in her marriage. She recounted the incident that gave her the courage to leave, posting on Facebook on Saturday, August 22, 2026, which would have been her 18th wedding anniversary.

Choosing to Celebrate with Her Children

Instead of marking the anniversary with her ex-husband, Chidindu chose to celebrate the day with her children, whom she described as her "joy givers" and the reason for her happiness. In her post, she shared a photo of her battered face, explaining that watching her children cry during an alleged assault by her ex-husband was the moment she decided to prioritize herself and her children.

"Today is supposed to be my 18 yrs marriage anniversary and have decided to celebrate it with my children, my Joy givers, and lovelies. They are d reason am happy," she wrote.

The Incident That Changed Everything

Chidindu detailed the traumatic event that led to her decision to leave. "The second picture attached to this post is just to show you the level of domestic violence I went through all because of marriage," she stated. "On that fateful day I watched my children cry and broken. That was the day I choose myself and my children."

She referred to 2021 as a year she will never forget. "The woman in this picture was hurting—not just physically, but deep inside her heart. The person I trusted, the person I loved, the person I believed would protect me, became the person who caused me the deepest pain," she wrote.

A Story of Betrayal and Survival

Chidindu expressed the depth of her emotional pain, noting that she gave her husband her love, loyalty, and trust. "I believed in our marriage. I held on even when things were difficult because I thought love meant fighting for the person you chose," she said. "But you betrayed something much deeper than my trust—you betrayed my heart."

She acknowledged that while she may forgive one day for her own peace, forgiveness does not mean forgetting or returning to the same love. "I loved you with a pure heart, but you broke that heart in ways I never imagined. And today, I have to be honest with myself: I can't love you anymore," she added.

Chidindu also revealed that the abuse led to her becoming a single mother. "When I was still healing, You did the worse that made me to become a single mother, although that woman cried, suffered, and felt broken, she survived," she wrote.

A Message of Hope and Self-Choice

In her concluding remarks, Chidindu emphasized her decision to move forward. "Today, I choose myself. I choose my peace. I choose my dignity. And I choose to believe that my life can still be beautiful beyond the pain," she stated. "Some wounds heal, but some betrayals permanently change the way you love the person who caused them."

Her post, shared by Linda Ikeji on August 23, 2026, included hashtags such as #domesticviolencesurvior, #mychildrenmypriority, and #ChoosePeace, highlighting her focus on recovery and prioritizing her children's well-being.
