Nine Injured in Shooting Near Indiana University

A mass shooting near Indiana University in Bloomington early Sunday morning left nine people injured, authorities said. The incident occurred just after midnight on April 26, as crowds gathered to celebrate the annual “Little 500” college cycling race on Kirkwood Avenue, a popular strip near campus.

Police responded to the 400 block of East Kirkwood, just one block from Indiana University, where they discovered multiple wounded individuals. According to WTHR, nine people were transported to local hospitals, six of them by ambulance, as of 3 a.m. Officials have not released information on their conditions or the types of injuries sustained.

Witnesses reported that a fight broke out between two women before the shooting, and one of the women allegedly pulled a gun and opened fire. “Two women fighting… I didn’t think too much of it,” a witness told the outlet. “I figured the police would get to it. But then I saw a girl reach toward her pants leg and start firing. By then, I was already running the other way.”

No suspects have been arrested so far. Police are asking anyone with information or video of the incident to contact detectives. University officials stated that no students are believed to have been involved in the violence.

“Last night marred what should have been a celebratory weekend for the IU and Bloomington communities,” university spokesman Mark Bode said in a statement. “While no IU students are believed to be involved, we condemn the violence in the strongest terms and thank the Bloomington Police Department, IUPD, State Police, and other law enforcement agencies who responded to the events off campus. Our thoughts are with the victims of this tragic incident.”
