NYSC Official in Custody as Corps Member Dies from Pregnancy Termination Complications in Ogun

An official of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ogun State, Abass Olalekan, is currently detained in police custody following the tragic death of a female corps member, Victoria Ariyo, in Abeokuta. The incident has sparked investigations and raised serious concerns about staff conduct within the youth service scheme.

Details of the Tragic Incident

Victoria Ariyo, who was serving her national youth service in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, reportedly died on Tuesday from severe complications linked to a terminated pregnancy. According to sources familiar with the matter, the corps member allegedly underwent a pregnancy termination procedure and later developed medical complications that ultimately led to her untimely death.

The deceased has since been laid to rest at Kobape Cemetery along the Kobape-Sagamu Road in Abeokuta, marking a somber end to what should have been a period of national service and personal development.

Connection to Previous Corps Member Death

This tragic event comes barely one month after another corps member, Adeleye Mary, died under mysterious circumstances in the same Abeokuta South Local Government Area. Mary, who was posted to Ogun State Television (OGTV) as her Place of Primary Assignment, was reportedly found lifeless in her apartment, which was located close to her workplace.

A source revealed that both deceased corps members were friends, stating that, "The first lady died at her residence, which is not far from her PPA. They found her lifeless body in the apartment and, up till now, nobody can tell the cause of her death."

Official Involvement and Arrest

Investigations have revealed that the NYSC official, Abass Olalekan, who serves as the Local Government Inspector for Abeokuta South, was allegedly involved in the circumstances leading to Victoria Ariyo's death. Sources claim that the LGI was engaged in a romantic relationship with the deceased corps member, which resulted in pregnancy, and it was the termination of this pregnancy that led to her fatal complications.

A police source commented on the situation, noting that "the development raises questions about the legality of romancing someone that should be in your care," highlighting the ethical breach involved when a supervising official becomes romantically involved with someone under their responsibility.

Confirming Olalekan's arrest, the police source stated, "He is in our custody at the command's headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta." However, authorities have clarified that there is no connection between this incident and the death of Adeleye Mary that occurred last month.

Official Statements and Investigations

Police Spokesperson in Ogun State, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the death of Victoria Ariyo and indicated that investigations are actively ongoing. While he acknowledged the case, he did not provide specific details regarding the arrest of the Local Government Inspector or the alleged involvement.

Babaseyi stated: "I can confirm that the case of the demise of Victoria Ariyo is under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department."

In an official statement released by the NYSC, Caroline Embu, Director of Information and Public Relations, described the death as tragic and extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased. She emphasized that the scheme is fully cooperating with law enforcement authorities to ensure justice is served.

The NYSC statement read in part: "The management of the National Youth Service Corps is deeply saddened by the loss of a Corps Member in Abeokuta, Ogun State, under circumstances that are currently being investigated. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and pray for the peaceful repose of her soul."

"The Scheme is aware of the news circulating in the media concerning the suspected involvement of a staff member. We wish to confirm that the matter is currently under investigation by relevant security agencies, and the individual concerned has been taken into custody."

NYSC Commitment to Standards and Welfare

The NYSC statement further reiterated the scheme's commitment to maintaining strict standards of conduct: "We wish to use this medium to reiterate that the NYSC maintains a strict code of conduct for its staff and Corps Members and will not condone any act of misconduct or abuse of office."

"We assure the public that we are cooperating fully with the law enforcement authorities to ensure that the truth is established and that justice is served. While investigations are ongoing, we urge the public to refrain from speculations and allow due process to take its course."

The statement concluded by reaffirming: "In the meantime, Management wishes to state, once again, that the welfare, safety, and dignity of our Corps Members remain paramount to the Scheme."

This incident has brought renewed attention to the welfare and protection mechanisms for corps members serving across Nigeria, particularly regarding relationships between officials and those under their supervision. The investigation continues as authorities work to determine the full circumstances surrounding this tragic death.
