The Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) has taken decisive action by sealing Bonny Pie Industry located in Akinbo Township, Ewekoro Local Council, following allegations of environmental pollution. The company is accused of discharging untreated wastewater into a river that serves as a vital water source for the local community.
Petition Sparks Investigation
The enforcement action was initiated after the Olu of Akinbo, Oba Rasheed Olamilekan, submitted a formal petition to OGEPA. In his complaint, the monarch highlighted that the factory had been releasing untreated wastewater directly into the river, posing significant risks to both the environment and public health. Residents who depend on this water source for their daily needs were particularly vulnerable to potential contamination.
Inspection and Sealing
Upon receiving the petition, OGEPA's enforcement unit promptly conducted an on-site inspection of the facility to verify the allegations. The preliminary findings confirmed the discharge of untreated wastewater, prompting the agency to seal the factory as a precautionary measure. This action aims to prevent further environmental degradation while a comprehensive investigation is carried out.
Government Commitment to Environmental Laws
The General Manager of OGEPA, Kehinde Bello, reiterated the state government's unwavering commitment to protecting the environment and enforcing strict compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and standards. He assured the Akinbo community that the investigation would be conducted with diligence and transparency, and that appropriate measures would be implemented based on the findings.
This sealing serves as a warning to all industries operating within Ogun State that environmental violations will not be tolerated. The agency remains dedicated to safeguarding public health and the natural ecosystem through rigorous enforcement actions.
