Ogun Waste Agency and Police Forge Stronger Alliance to Combat Illegal Dumping
The Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) has significantly bolstered its collaboration with the Ogun State Police Command to enhance the enforcement of environmental regulations and tackle the rampant issue of indiscriminate refuse disposal in public spaces. This renewed partnership aims to ensure stricter compliance with waste management laws across the state.
Recent Enforcement Actions and Arrests
In a recent crackdown, OGWAMA successfully arrested and prosecuted 108 individuals in Abeokuta for illegally dumping waste along roadsides and medians. This action underscores the authority's commitment to maintaining cleanliness and order in public areas, with the police providing crucial support to uphold these efforts.
High-Level Meeting to Deepen Collaboration
To further solidify this alliance, Farouk Akintunde, the Special Adviser to the Governor and Managing Director of OGWAMA, led a delegation to the office of the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, in Eleweran, Abeokuta, on Monday. During the meeting, Akintunde emphasized that the partnership is specifically focused on enforcing laws that prohibit the indiscriminate disposal of waste in public places.
"The partnership is in the area of enforcement of environmental and waste management laws which forbid residents from dumping refuse indiscriminately in public places such as roadsides and medians," Akintunde stated. He praised the police command for its cooperation and expressed optimism that this strengthened collaboration would enhance existing ties and improve overall adherence to waste management regulations.
Police Commitment and Public Awareness Initiatives
In response, Commissioner Ojajuni reaffirmed the police command's unwavering support for OGWAMA's enforcement activities. He announced that officers would intensify their efforts to uphold environmental laws and issued a stern warning to residents against obstructing officials while they perform their duties.
Ojajuni also advised OGWAMA to expand public awareness through sustained sensitization campaigns and partnerships with various stakeholders. Key recommendations included:
- Collaborating with non-governmental organizations, schools, and community groups.
- Establishing waste marshals to monitor and report violations.
- Encouraging residents to utilize designated Private Sector Participants for proper waste disposal.
He stressed the critical importance of keeping public spaces free from refuse and urged the community to actively participate in maintaining a clean environment. This joint initiative highlights a proactive approach to environmental stewardship and public health in Ogun State.
