The Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom in Delta State is in mourning following the death of a prominent member of the Umu Obi Obahai Royal Family, Prince Ikechukwu Okonjo. The passing of the prince was formally announced in a statement issued on Friday by the Palace Secretary, Prince Ifeakanachukwu Emordi.

According to the statement, Prince Okonjo died on May 30, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of service, family devotion, and commitment to the traditions of the ancient kingdom. Reacting to the loss, the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Obi (Dr.) Ifechukwude Aninshi Okonjo II, expressed profound sorrow over the demise of the royal family member, describing him as a devoted husband, loving father, cherished brother, dedicated uncle, and a proud son of the Umu Obi Obahai Royal Family.

The monarch noted that Prince Okonjo's death represents a significant loss not only to his immediate family but also to the entire Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom, where he was widely respected for his character and commitment to family values. According to the royal statement, the deceased was an irreplaceable member of the royal family whose roots were deeply connected to the history, dignity, and enduring traditions of the kingdom.

“He was, above all, a proud and irreplaceable member of the Umu Obi Obahai Royal Family — a family whose roots run deep in the history, dignity and tradition of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom,” the monarch stated. Reflecting on his life and contributions, the Obi said Prince Okonjo lived with grace and touched the lives of many who came in contact with him, adding that his memory would remain cherished by family members, friends, and members of the community.

“His passage leaves a void that words can only partially express. He walked among us with grace, and his memory shall endure in the hearts of all who knew and loved him,” the statement added. The late prince is survived by his wife, daughter, brothers, sisters, and other members of his extended family.

On behalf of the Palace and the people of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom, the monarch extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, assuring them of the support and solidarity of the royal household and the wider community during this difficult period. The Obi also called on sons and daughters of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom, both at home and across the diaspora, to remember the family in their prayers and continue to show them love and support as they navigate the painful loss.
