The Oyo State Police Command has dismissed a viral report alleging the death of an abducted schoolchild, describing the publication as a malicious fabrication intended to cause panic and hinder ongoing rescue operations. The Command, through its Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, issued a statement on Friday categorically denying the claim.
Police Clarify No Confirmation of Death
The statement emphasized that neither the Oyo State Police Command nor any other security agency involved in the rescue efforts has confirmed such a development. It labeled the report as false, misleading, and entirely unfounded. The police expressed concern that the fabricated story was deliberately crafted to incite public anxiety and undermine security operations.
Misinformation Tactics Condemned
The Command criticized the use of emotional narratives, speculative claims, and unverified accounts to manipulate public opinion and heighten fear among residents. It noted that spreading such misinformation undermines responsible journalism and serves the interests of criminal elements who thrive on fear and uncertainty.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to securing the safe rescue of the abducted pupils, stating that all operational activities are conducted with professionalism, diligence, and confidentiality. They warned that disseminating false information at a critical stage could jeopardize rescue efforts, cause additional trauma to families, and mislead the public.
Warning to Media and Public
The Command cautioned bloggers, social media influencers, online content creators, and media organizations against publishing or amplifying unverified security-related information. It described the indiscriminate sharing of false reports as irresponsible and unacceptable, especially those capable of inciting fear or causing public disorder.
Media practitioners and online publishers were urged to exercise professionalism, responsibility, and due diligence in their duties, avoiding becoming channels for misinformation and fearmongering.
Official Channels for Updates
Residents were advised to disregard the false report and rely only on information released through official channels of the Nigeria Police Force and other authorized government agencies. The Oyo State Police Command assured the public that verified updates on the incident would be communicated as necessary.
