Oyo Police Smash Transnational Ammunition Trafficking Syndicate in Saki

The Oyo State Police Command has achieved a significant operational breakthrough by dismantling a transnational ammunition trafficking syndicate. In a meticulously coordinated intelligence-led operation, two suspects were apprehended at Budo Mosalasi, Saki, with a substantial cache of illegal ammunition recovered.

Arrests and Seizure Details

According to a statement issued on Friday, February 27, 2026, by the command's spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the suspects identified as Isiaka Dare, aged 35, and Taiwo Ayodabo, aged 33, both from Tede, were arrested following credible intelligence. The operation was executed by operatives of the Command Monitoring Unit, Saki Operation Base.

The police recovered 105 packets of pump-action cartridges, cleverly concealed within four jerry cans. Each packet contained 25 cartridges, resulting in a total seizure of 2,625 cartridges. Additionally, two unregistered motorcycles, believed to have been utilized for the illegal transportation and distribution of the ammunition, were confiscated during the operation.

Transnational Criminal Network Uncovered

Investigations have revealed that the suspects operated across international borders, illegally trafficking ammunition from the Republic of Benin into Nigeria through unauthorized routes. Their criminal enterprise involved the clandestine importation and distribution of prohibited ammunition to unauthorized individuals within the country.

This illicit trade poses a severe threat to public safety, as such weapons are often deployed in the commission of violent crimes including armed robbery, banditry, and kidnapping. The suspects have reportedly confessed to their involvement and are currently assisting investigators in unraveling the wider transnational network and identifying other accomplices.

Police Leadership and Public Appeal

The Commissioner of Police, Femi Haruna, has directed that the suspects be charged to court upon the conclusion of a thorough and comprehensive investigation. He commended the professionalism and precision demonstrated by the operatives in carrying out the intelligence-led operation.

CP Haruna emphasized that proactive policing and actionable intelligence remain critical tools in dismantling organized criminal networks. He also expressed appreciation to members of the public whose timely and credible information facilitated this breakthrough, highlighting that community partnership is indispensable in the fight against violent crime.

The Commissioner reassured residents that the Oyo State Police Command will leave no stone unturned in ensuring the state does not serve as a safe haven for criminal activities. The command has urged the public to remain vigilant and continue to provide useful information as efforts intensify to rid the state of illegal arms proliferation and its attendant security threats.
