Parents of a 5-year-old girl, Hauwa'u Hayatu, who was allegedly raped in Anguwan Rogo community, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, have accused the police of demanding N50,000 to initiate an investigation. The suspect, identified as Zubairu Ussaini, is accused of sexually assaulting the minor last Thursday.
Mother's Account of the Incident
Speaking to Daily Trust on Monday, July 12, 2026, the victim's mother, Suwaiba Iliyasu, recounted the events. After her daughter returned from school with her elder brother, they came home with roasted groundnuts. Suspecting something, she asked Hauwa'u who gave them the groundnuts. The child said their neighbor had removed her trousers, beaten her, and given her the groundnuts. Iliyasu confronted the man, who admitted beating the children but denied removing the child's trousers. However, Hauwa'u later told her mother that the man took her to a room, removed both their trousers, and placed her on his lap.
Police Demand for Payment
The parents reported the case at the Anguwan Rogo police station. The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) ordered a medical examination, which confirmed the child was defiled. The suspect was arrested. However, when the case was referred to 'A' Division, a female police officer demanded N50,000 to open a case file. The parents said they could not afford the amount, fearing the suspect might be released due to their inability to pay.
Father's Frustration
The victim's father, Hayatu Muhammad, expressed shock at the demand. He stated, 'I was surprised to hear the police asking us to pay the money. At the Anguwan Rogo Police Division and at the Police Headquarters, nobody asked us to pay anything. But at 'A' Division, they said we must pay the money. I go out daily to look for what my family will eat. I am not rich. How will I get the money?' He further questioned the purpose of the payment and the absence of a receipt. The parents have called on the Commissioner of Police and other relevant authorities to ensure justice for their daughter.
