The Delta State Police Command has made a significant breakthrough in the investigation of the brutal murder of retired Justice Ifeoma Okogwu, arresting one suspect while intensifying the search for the principal suspect still at large.
Gruesome Discovery at Asaba Residence
On the morning of Monday, November 24, 2025, a horrifying scene unfolded at the Asaba residence of the retired justice. Her brother made the tragic discovery when he visited her home, finding her lifeless body in the sitting room under disturbing circumstances.
The victim was found with her hands and legs tightly bound, and her mouth covered with a wrapper. The immediate alert to police authorities triggered a swift response from law enforcement agencies.
Police Response and Investigation Progress
According to Police Spokesperson SP Bright Edafe, the Divisional Police Officer of 'A' Division Asaba acted promptly upon receiving the complaint. The officer led a team to the residence where they evacuated the corpse and transported it to the mortuary for autopsy procedures.
Investigations have led to the arrest of Lucky Mathew, the security guard on duty at the time of the incident. However, the principal suspect, identified as Godwin Vanem, remains at large and is believed to have fled the apartment after committing what police describe as a "dastardly act."
Manhunt Intensifies Under Commissioner's Directive
Delta State Commissioner of Police CP Olufemi Abaniwonda has taken personal interest in the case, ordering its transfer to the State Criminal Investigation Department, specifically the homicide section, for discreet and thorough investigation.
The police command has launched a comprehensive manhunt for the fleeing suspect and is appealing to the public for assistance. The Commissioner has expressed condolences to the family of the deceased justice while assuring them of the command's commitment to delivering justice.
Police have released three emergency contact numbers for anyone with useful information: 08036684974, 08114895600, and 08025666914.
In a tragic historical footnote, this is not the first tragedy to strike the Okogwu family. Investigations reveal that Justice Okogwu's then seven-year-old daughter was kidnapped back in 2009, adding another layer of sorrow to this devastating case.
