Police Foil Highway Robbery, One Suspect Killed in Gun Battle
Operatives of the Nasarawa State Police Command have neutralised a suspected armed robber and recovered a firearm during a fierce encounter on a major highway. The incident, which underscores the command's intensified security operations during the festive season, occurred on the busy Lafia–Obi Road.
Details of the Confrontation
According to a statement released by the command's Police Public Relations Officer, SP Rahman Nansel, the event unfolded on Friday, December 26, at about 7:45 pm. Police officers attached to the Jenkwe Division, while on an intensive patrol mission, came across a dangerous situation.
A five-man gang of armed robbers had blocked the highway, terrorising motorists. Upon sighting the police patrol team, the suspects immediately opened fire, leading to a serious exchange of gunshots.
"During the exchange of fire, one of the suspects was neutralised, while the others escaped into the bush with suspected gunshot wounds," SP Nansel stated. From the scene, the police recovered a locally fabricated pistol and one live ammunition from the neutralised suspect.
Ongoing Manhunt and Commissioner's Directive
The spokesperson confirmed that the body of the deceased suspect has been deposited at the Federal University of Lafia Teaching Hospital morgue. He emphasised that a concerted effort is currently underway to track down and arrest the fleeing members of the criminal gang who vanished into the nearby bush.
SP Nansel clarified that this successful operation was executed in line with the direct order of the Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa State, CP Shetima Mohammed. The CP had mandated all tactical units and divisions to intensify raids on criminal hideouts and increase patrols to ensure a peaceful yuletide celebration for residents.
"The commissioner commended the gallantry and professionalism of the operatives and urged them to sustain the momentum in tackling criminal activities across the state," Nansel added. The police command also reassured the public of its unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property throughout Nasarawa State.
