Police Inspector Fatally Stabbed in Akure Altercation
Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have arrested two individuals suspected to be hoodlums for the alleged murder of a police inspector in Akure, the state capital. The tragic event occurred on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, sending shockwaves through the community.
Details of the Attack and Arrests
The suspects, identified as Shina Jacob, 25, and Felix Olalekan, 32, reportedly attacked the police inspector during a confrontation in the Oke-Arata area within the Arakale axis. According to sources, the inspector, who had recently been transferred from the Anti-Cultism Unit to B-Division, was stabbed, causing widespread panic. Residents and traders in the area fled hurriedly as the situation unfolded.
The Police Public Relations Officer for the state, Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the incident. He stated that the officer was rushed to a hospital for treatment but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. "An altercation ensued between the officer and some recalcitrant individuals, during which the officer was tragically stabbed," Ayanlade said.
Swift Police Response and Official Warning
Following the attack, the Commissioner of Police ordered an immediate and coordinated response. A team of operatives was deployed to the scene, leading to the swift arrest of the two suspects directly linked to the crime.
The police command issued a stern warning, stating it will not tolerate any form of assault on its officers. It also emphasized that the Nigeria Police would not hesitate to deal decisively with any personnel found infringing on the rights of citizens. The arrested suspects will be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
This killing comes just days after a personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) was also stabbed to death by a mentally unstable man in the Oba-Ile area of Akure, raising concerns about the safety of security personnel.
