The Kogi State Police Command has launched an investigation into the alleged killing of a primary school teacher, Maryam Usman, who died after being assaulted for disciplining a pupil in Olamaboro Local Government Area.
According to reports, the pupil fell and sustained an arm injury during the punishment. The pupil's father, Abdullahi Ishaka, allegedly stormed Maryam's residence with two other individuals and assaulted her. Sources told Daily Trust that additional individuals attacked Maryam again later the same day while she was on her way to the mosque.
Police Confirm Culpable Homicide Case
The command's spokesperson, SP Oyiza Salisu Afusat, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday, June 28, 2026. She stated that a case of culpable homicide was reported at the Olamaboro Divisional Headquarters on June 25, 2026.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that on 18th June, 2026, one Abdullahi Ishaka, accompanied by two women, went to Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School, Ugbamaka, where they assaulted a staff member, Maryam Usman, aged 30, for disciplining a pupil,” the statement read. “The victim sustained serious injuries and was initially treated at a hospital in Ugbamaka before being referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital, Okpo, for further medical attention. She, however, passed away on 25th June, 2026.”
Suspects at Large, Investigation Ongoing
Afusat said that following the report, operatives visited the scene and the deceased’s residence, where necessary documentation was carried out. Arrangements are being made to convey the corpse to the General Hospital, Ankpa, for medical examination and an autopsy. The police spokesperson disclosed that the suspects fled before officers arrived, adding that efforts are ongoing to apprehend them.
“Upon their arrest, the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet and comprehensive investigation,” she added.
