Police Probe Gruesome Killing of Woman in Port Harcourt
The Rivers State Police Command has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the brutal murder of a woman following a violent attack by suspected armed hoodlums in Port Harcourt. This incident, which took place on March 19, 2026, was formally reported by Miss Divine Anyanwu of No. 9 Aliobi Drive, Elimgbu, at the Abuloma Police Division on March 21 at approximately 4:30 p.m.
Details of the Attack
According to a press release issued by police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko, the victims, Anyanwu and her friend identified as Special Bensington, had boarded a Bolt ride from a hotel located on Emmanuel Road, off Odili Road. While traveling along the Total Gospel area, also off Odili Road, they were trailed and ambushed by unknown gunmen operating a tricycle. The assailants opened fire on the vehicle, resulting in severe gunshot injuries to one of the occupants.
Medical Response and Death
The injured victim was promptly rushed to BMH Hospital in Port Harcourt for emergency treatment. However, despite medical efforts, she was later confirmed dead by a doctor on duty on March 21. Iringe-Koko stated that following the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Abuloma Division led a team of officers to both the scene of the incident and the hospital as part of preliminary investigations. The deceased has since been deposited in a mortuary for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Investigation and Police Response
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a discreet forensic investigation, with ongoing efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack. The police have condemned the killing, describing it as heinous, and have assured residents that the perpetrators will be brought to justice. Iringe-Koko reaffirmed the commitment of the police to keeping the public informed as the investigation progresses and called on members of the public with useful information to assist by coming forward or contacting the appropriate authorities.
