The Benue State Police Command has officially confirmed the arrest of two serving police sergeants in connection with an alleged armed robbery operation. This shocking development has raised serious concerns about internal security breaches within law enforcement agencies.
Police Surveillance Operation Leads to Arrest
According to official statements from the command, their surveillance patrol team acted on credible intelligence to intercept a suspicious vehicle. The operation targeted a red Toyota Corolla, model year 2010, bearing Registration Number NEG-35-AE. This vehicle had been previously reported stolen at gunpoint in Akwanga and was allegedly being driven toward Keffi when intercepted.
Dramatic Chase and Capture
The suspects reportedly attempted to evade capture by forcing their way through a police barrier at Angwan Lambu. However, determined police officers pursued the vehicle and eventually apprehended the suspects at a military checkpoint near Uke. This coordinated effort between police and military personnel proved crucial in the successful operation.
Recovered Exhibits and Evidence
Upon arrest, authorities recovered significant evidence from the suspects. The recovered items included:
- One AK-47 rifle with breech number
- Three magazines loaded with 16 rounds of live ammunition
- One black face mask
- Three mobile phones
- Various personal belongings
These exhibits provide substantial physical evidence linking the suspects to criminal activities.
Identification of the Suspects
Security analyst Zagazola Makama reported that the arrested individuals were identified as serving police officers. The suspects are:
- Sgt. Shedrack Abednego, attached to the STS (FID) in Abuja
- Sgt. John Ayuba, attached to the CP Crack Squad, FCT Command
Their status as serving officers has added a troubling dimension to this case, highlighting potential vulnerabilities within police structures.
Ongoing Investigation and Implications
The Benue State Police Command has emphasized that investigations are actively continuing. Authorities are working to determine:
- The full extent of the suspects' involvement in criminal activities
- Possible connections to other criminal networks
- How serving officers became involved in such serious offenses
This case underscores the ongoing challenges facing Nigeria's security apparatus and the importance of internal accountability mechanisms within law enforcement agencies.
