An eight-month pregnant housewife, Halima Yusuf, has filed a petition for confirmation of divorce at the Upper Area Court Mararaba in Nasarawa State, accusing her husband of physical abuse and neglect.
According to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Yusuf alleged that her husband, Isah, subjected her to beatings and failed to fulfill his marital duties. In her petition, she stated, "We got married under Sharia Islamic law. Isah does not provide food, clothing, or healthcare for me."
The petitioner informed the court that she is eight months pregnant and has been living with her parents in Mararaba due to the circumstances. She requested the court to confirm the divorce and issue an order compelling Isah to take responsibility for her pregnancy and the unborn child.
Presiding Judge Mohammed Yakubu adjourned the case until June 11 for further hearing. The court will hear arguments from both parties before making a decision on the divorce and related matters.
Domestic violence and neglect remain pressing issues in many communities, with legal systems increasingly called upon to protect vulnerable individuals, especially pregnant women. This case highlights the challenges faced by women in abusive relationships and the importance of judicial intervention to ensure their safety and well-being.
