The Delta State Police Command has launched an intensive manhunt following the brutal murder of retired High Court judge Ifeoma Okogwu at her residence in Asaba. The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the legal community and raised serious security concerns in the state capital.
Gruesome Discovery and Security Lapses
The body of 70-year-old retired justice Ifeoma Okogwu was discovered at her home behind The Pointer Newspapers office on November 23, 2025. According to police sources, assailants had tied the judge's hands and legs before ransacking the property and ultimately killing her.
The case took a disturbing turn when family members revealed concerning security lapses. Ogbueshi Okogwu, the victim's younger brother, expressed frustration about the disappearance of the night security guard, calling it "a major red flag". He further questioned why the morning guard simply sat idle after finding the gate wide open, stating "I do not understand this situation at all".
Police Response and Investigation Progress
Police authorities have moved swiftly in response to the crime. Superintendent Bright Edafe, Delta State Police spokesperson, confirmed that the Divisional Police Officer of A Division responded immediately after receiving a complaint from Mrs Okogwu's brother.
"Upon receipt of the complaint, the DPO swiftly led men to the residence of the late retired judge, where the corpse was evacuated and taken to the mortuary for autopsy," Edafe stated.
Investigations have yielded significant breakthroughs with one suspect, Lucky Matthew, already in police custody. However, the principal suspect, Godwin Vanem, remains at large, prompting an extensive manhunt operation across Delta State.
Broader Security Concerns in Delta
This murder occurs against a backdrop of increasing violent crimes in Delta State. The region has witnessed a worrying rise in kidnappings and killings in recent months. In July 2025, government contractor Lucky Ugbo was abducted in Ogwashi-Uku, highlighting persistent security challenges.
The case has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department under the direct supervision of Commissioner of Police Olufemi Abaniwonda. The commissioner has personally consoled the Okogwu family and assured them of thorough investigation and justice.
Police have appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the apprehension of Godwin Vanem, emphasizing that investigations remain active and ongoing. The security company that deployed the guards has also been summoned for questioning as authorities seek to unravel the circumstances surrounding the retired judge's tragic death.
