Retired Vice Principal Arrested for Allegedly Killing Neighbor Over Nylon Bag in Ondo
The Ondo State Police Command has taken into custody a retired school vice principal, Alhaji Abdullahi Kasim Ayodele, for allegedly beating his 54-year-old neighbor, Mrs. Caroline Agoi, to death. This tragic incident stemmed from a dispute over a nylon bag that reportedly blew into his compound in Owo, Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State.
Details of the Fatal Altercation
The altercation occurred along Uselu–Isuada Road in Owo, near a transformer within the community. According to reports, the suspect initially engaged the deceased in a heated argument across their fence after accusing her of being responsible for a nylon bag that was blown by the wind into his compound. The disagreement escalated when Abdullahi and his son left their compound in anger and went to the woman’s residence.
Eyewitnesses stated that the suspect picked up a bench in front of the woman’s house and, with the assistance of his son, allegedly attacked her with it. During the assault, the woman reportedly collapsed, with foam coming out of her mouth, and was later confirmed dead.
Witness Account and Aftermath
A source revealed that the deceased was on the phone with her husband during the altercation when the suspect allegedly stormed her house and struck her with the bench. The source told the Ondo State Government-owned publication, Hope Newspaper, “I learnt that the quarrel started because Alhaji accused the woman of throwing the nylon into his compound. The wind had blown it there, but he insisted it belonged to her. She was calling her husband on the phone when he angrily entered the compound and hit her with a bench.”
It was further gathered that the deceased’s husband, who works as a driver to the Olori of the Olowo of Owo, fainted in shock upon returning home and learning about the tragic incident. He was later rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owo for medical attention.
Community Reaction and Police Response
The body of the deceased has since been deposited in a mortuary, while residents of the area have expressed shock and outrage over the incident. The Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Jimoh Abayomi, confirmed the incident, stating that the suspect is currently in police custody and that investigations are ongoing.
This case highlights the severe consequences of what began as a minor dispute, leading to a tragic loss of life and community unrest in Owo.
