The Rivers State Police Command has made a significant breakthrough in the fight against violent crime, resulting in the arrest of three suspects, the exhumation of a murder victim's body from a shallow grave, and the recovery of a stolen vehicle. Authorities have described this as a major achievement in their ongoing efforts to curb violent crime in the state.
Victim Lured Under False Pretense
The victim, Christopher Akpabio, a 55-year-old native of Akwa Ibom State, was allegedly hired by the suspects under the guise of transporting them to Asarama Community in Andoni Local Council for a traditional marriage ceremony. Instead, he was murdered, and his vehicle was stolen. The incident was reported on May 22, 2026, after Akpabio went missing.
Investigation and Arrests
According to a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Agabe Kaborlo, investigators later discovered the victim's remains buried in a shallow grave in Asarama Community. The Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), Diobu, acting on directives from the Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, launched an intelligence-driven operation that led to the arrest of three suspects on May 28.
The suspects have been identified as David Mark, 30, and Nkajit Williams, 45, both natives of Andoni Local Council, and Godgift John, 33, from Okrika Local Council. Police recovered the stolen minibus, a black Daihatsu Hijet with registration number BGM 328 DA, allegedly taken from the deceased after the murder.
Forensic Examination and Ongoing Efforts
The victim's remains have been deposited at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital mortuary for preservation and further forensic examination. Police said efforts are ongoing to apprehend a fourth suspect who remains at large.
The command described the breakthrough as part of its commitment to combating violent crimes and ensuring the safety of residents across the state. CP Olugbenga Adepoju reiterated the command's determination to root out criminal elements and bring perpetrators to justice.
Public Safety Advisory
The police urged members of the public, particularly commercial drivers, to exercise caution when entering transportation or business arrangements with unfamiliar persons. Drivers embarking on long-distance journeys are advised to inform family members, colleagues, or trusted associates of their destinations and movements. Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the command's emergency response channels.
The Rivers State Police Command assured residents that it remains resolute in its determination to protect lives and property and deny criminals safe haven within the state.
