Attack on Security Checkpoint Leaves Two Policemen Dead
Gunmen killed two police officers and injured a third during a routine stop-and-search operation along the Mbodo/Aluu axis of Obiri-Kwerre Road in Rivers State. The attack occurred at approximately 9 pm on Monday, June 29, 2026, in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
The assailants opened fire on the officers, who were attached to the Aluu Division in Ikwerre Local Government Area, and immediately fled the scene in their vehicle. A viral video circulating on social media shows the lifeless bodies of the officers lying in pools of blood.
According to a voice in the background of the video, the gunmen had been robbing in the area before targeting the police operatives.
Police Commissioner Visits Scene, Confirms Casualties
Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, visited the scene on Tuesday morning, June 30, 2026, alongside his management team for an on-the-spot assessment. The state police spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police Blessing Agabe, confirmed the incident.
“Yes, I can confirm. Two of our men died, and the other one was injured and is receiving treatment in the Hospital,” Agabe stated. “The Commissioner of Police, with other members of the command’s management team, visited the scene of the incident this morning to assess the situation, and the investigation is ongoing.”
Previous Attacks on Police in Rivers State
This attack follows a similar incident in Rivers State where Inspector Christian Gbaratee was shot dead and Inspector Ekoro Isong went missing during a confrontation with gunmen along the Port Harcourt–Aba Road. The assailants stole Gbaratee’s gun and a suspect in custody during that attack.
In a separate incident, gunmen attacked the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, Plateau State, leaving two police officers dead and sparking panic. Authorities have launched investigations and urged the public to rely only on verified information amid ongoing tensions.
Ongoing Investigation
Police authorities have assured the public that investigations into the latest attack are ongoing. The injured officer is receiving treatment at a hospital. The command has called for calm and urged residents to provide any information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.
