A 100-level student at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumeni, has sustained severe gunshot injuries following a shooting incident on campus grounds. The attack comes just two days after rival cult groups engaged in an armed confrontation on the university premises, heightening security concerns among students and staff.
Shooting Incident and Emergency Response
Following Wednesday's shooting, the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where medical personnel prepared for emergency surgery to remove lodged bullet pellets. A source familiar with the development explained that fellow students were rallying to cover the medical costs.
“His close friends were contributing money to raise funds for the surgery to happen,” the source said.
Previous Cult Clash and Police Investigation
The earlier clash was linked to an ongoing supremacy dispute between suspected members of the Vikings and Ku Klux Klan cult groups, creating widespread apprehension among students and staff. The Rivers State Police Command previously confirmed investigations into the earlier cult clash through spokesperson Blessing Agabe. Law enforcement officials are continuing to gather details regarding the latest outbreak of violence.
University Suspends Students' Union Government Week
Amid growing tension, university authorities intervened by suspending all remaining activities scheduled for the annual Students’ Union Government Week. In an official bulletin, the institution’s Registrar, Dr Chinonye Ajie, directed the student body to cease festivities and resume lectures immediately.
“This is to inform the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education Community that all remaining activities for the Students’ Union Government Week have been suspended by the University Management with immediate effect,” the bulletin read.
Return to Classes and Warning to Students
The administration emphasized that normal academic schedules must be maintained, warning that students who fail to attend lectures will be held accountable for their absence. “Students are therefore advised to return to classes on Thursday, August 13th, 2026, for normal academic activities,” the bulletin stated.
University officials concluded by urging all students to avoid conduct capable of jeopardizing their academic standing or threatening peace and security within the institution.
