Italian National Receives Six-Year Prison Term for Mid-Air Sexual Assault
A 45-year-old Italian man has been sentenced to six years in prison for attempting to rape a woman during an easyJet flight between Italy and Britain. The disturbing incident took place on a late evening flight on May 13, 2025, highlighting serious concerns about passenger safety on commercial airlines.
Details of the Assault and Legal Proceedings
Nicola Cristiano, a father-of-two from Italy, was traveling to Scotland on a work trip when he moved seats to sit next to the victim. During the flight from Naples to Edinburgh, he repeatedly grabbed the woman by the hand and neck in an effort to force her to touch his exposed crotch. The assailant also attempted to kiss the victim and groped her breast and body, causing significant distress.
Following the assault, Cristiano moved to another part of the aircraft, allowing the woman to alert the cabin crew. He was promptly arrested upon the plane's landing in Edinburgh. Forensic evidence, including his semen found on the victim's cheek and lip, played a crucial role in the investigation.
Court Sentencing and Victim Impact
After a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh last month, Cristiano was found guilty of attempted rape. Judge Alison Stirling emphasized the severity of the crime, noting that custody was the only appropriate sentence due to the nature of the offending. The judge stated that the sentence aims to punish the offender, express society's disapproval, protect the public, and facilitate rehabilitation.
In her victim statement, the woman described how the assault has left a lasting effect on her sense of safety and control.
