Troops of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) have arrested a soldier and four other suspected drug peddlers during a raid on a notorious drug hideout in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State. The operation, which took place at about 5:00 p.m. on July 30, was carried out in the Congo-Russia area following intelligence reports on illicit drug activities in the location.
Arrests and Recovered Exhibits
The troops raided the hideout and arrested five suspects: Lance Corporal Luka Yakubu of 82 Battalion, Abdulkarim Abubakar, Adam Musa, John Isah, and Charles Ibrahim. During the operation, they recovered quantities of substances suspected to be marijuana and other illicit drugs. These have been taken into custody as exhibits pending forensic examination.
Intelligence sources told security analyst Zagazola Makama on August 6, 2026, that the arrested soldier had allegedly been absent without official leave (AWOL) and was reportedly notorious for involvement in illicit drug trafficking. All five suspects are currently in custody and are undergoing further investigation, while security agencies continue efforts to uncover possible links to wider criminal networks.
Part of Sustained Crackdown
Security sources said the raid forms part of Operation Enduring Peace's sustained crackdown on criminal hideouts and illicit drug trafficking, which authorities believe contribute to violent crimes and insecurity in Plateau State. The sources added that intelligence-led operations against drug trafficking, illegal arms circulation, and other criminal activities will continue across the Joint Operations Area to enhance public safety.
The operation underscores the military's commitment to dismantling criminal networks in the region. With the arrest of a serving soldier, the military is also sending a strong message that personnel involved in illegal activities will face consequences. Further investigations are expected to reveal the extent of the drug network and any connections to other criminal enterprises.
