A 65-year-old farmer and his sick wife were beaten with wooden sticks on a public road by their two sons in Pune district, India, over the sale of land belonging to the mother. The incident occurred on August 30 around 6 pm in their village, according to police statements on Wednesday, September 2.
Attack Details and Police Report
Tukaram Kisan Raut and his wife Anjana Raut were out for a walk when their sons, Sanjay Raut and Rajendra Raut, allegedly followed them in a car. The sons abused the couple and threatened to kill them if they did not cancel the land sale, police said.
A First Information Report (FIR) filed at the Indapur police station stated: "They started asking Tukaram, 'Why did you sell the land?' They then assaulted Tukaram and Anjana with wooden sticks. Tukaram sustained injuries to his back, face, thighs and left shoulder, while Anjana was allegedly struck on her right wrist and waist."
Threats and Legal Action
During the assault, the brothers demanded that their parents retake possession of the land. One son allegedly threatened, "Take back the land you have sold, otherwise we will show you what we are capable of," according to the FIR.
Passersby gathered at the spot and alerted the police. After police arrived, Tukaram and Anjana were taken to Indapur sub-district hospital. A video of the incident taken by local people was shared on social media.
Tukaram told police that his two sons live separately with their families in Malwadi No 2, Indapur. The police have booked the brothers for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons, intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace, and criminal intimidation.
A video of the shocking assault, which left the couple injured, has surfaced, and Indapur police have registered a case against the sons.
