Michigan Teen Rescued After Mouthing 'Help' to Gas Station Clerk During Kidnapping

A terrifying ordeal for a 16-year-old girl in Hamtramck, Michigan, ended in a dramatic rescue after she silently mouthed the word "help" to a vigilant gas station worker. The incident, which unfolded on the morning of April 13, highlights the quick thinking of both the victim and community members.

Abduction at Gunpoint

According to Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, the teenager was waiting at a bus stop around 7 a.m. when Donald Fields, 48, allegedly placed something on her back and forced her into a van at gunpoint. A fellow student from the same school witnessed the abduction and immediately called 911 as Fields drove away with the girl.

Prosecutors stated that Fields then sexually assaulted the girl inside the van before stopping at a local petrol station. He entered the store with the minor, reportedly asking her to buy cigarettes for him.

Heroic Intervention by Shop Worker

Abdulrahman Abohatem, working behind the counter that morning, sensed something was amiss. "When he ask her to pay for the cigarettes, I stop and go there's something wrong," Abohatem told local media. "And she mouthed to me, like with no sound, 'help'."

Acting swiftly, Abohatem came out from behind the protective glass, confronted Fields, and brought the girl to safety. "I go out, I kick him out, I ask the girl go behind me," he recounted. "I feel good when you save somebody. Sixteen years old - she is a child."

Police Response and Arrest

Meanwhile, the Hamtramck Police Department had launched a search for the missing teenager after being notified by students who tracked her location to the gas station. Responding officers rushed to the scene, where bodycam footage captured the moment they arrested Fields as he walked out of the store alone.

Fields reportedly asked, "For what?" as he was detained. Police have released additional footage showing the alleged abduction at the bus stop, adding to the chilling nature of the case.

Charges and Legal Proceedings

Fields faces serious charges, including two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, kidnapping, one count of felonious assault, and three counts of felony firearm. Hamtramck Mayor Adam Alharbi noted that Fields was also charged with one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm due to a prior criminal history of sexual assault charges.

During his arraignment, Fields entered a not guilty plea and is being held without bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 30.

Praise for the Survivor

Prosecutor Kym Worthy commended the teenager's resilience. "Our young survivor in this case was simply walking in broad daylight when she was viciously attacked and sexually assaulted," Worthy said. "Despite what she had just gone through, her quick thinking and mental toughness saved her life. We cannot reverse what happened to her, but we can work hard to bring justice to her."

This case underscores the importance of community vigilance and the courage of individuals like Abohatem, whose actions prevented further harm. The collaboration between witnesses, students, and law enforcement played a crucial role in ensuring the girl's safety and the suspect's apprehension.
