A Nigerian tenant identified as Mr Bachelor has revealed that he lived in a rented apartment for more than a year before discovering that his landlord's late father was buried inside his sitting room. The shocking disclosure came on September 20, 2026, when members of the landlord's family arrived at the property to exhume the remains.
Discovery of the Corpse in the Sitting Room
Mr Bachelor, who shared his experience on X (formerly Twitter), said he was at home when the landlord's family arrived with an unexpected request. They told him they had come to move the remains of their late brother, who was the father of the landlord. According to Mr Bachelor, it was only then that he learned the man had been buried in the middle of his sitting room without his knowledge.
He explained, "He was buried right in my living room, and I was not aware until they came around today." The tenant noted that the house was new and he was the first tenant, which made the discovery even more startling. He expressed shock at having lived and slept above a burial ground for over a year.
Family's Plan to Exhume and Repair
The landlord's family reportedly told Mr Bachelor that they wanted to exhume the corpse and move it to another location they had prepared. They assured him that they would repair the sitting room after the exhumation was completed. The tenant recounted the family's words in his post, saying they told him, "We want to exhume the corpse and move it to another place they've prepared and they will repair my sitting room back."
Mr Bachelor's post read: "I rented a house that someone was buried inside the living room and I didn't know. My landlord's family came around today and told me they want to move their dead brother who apparently is the father of my landlord. He was buried right in my living room and I was not aware until they came around today."
Call for Caution Among Nigerian Renters
The tenant described the experience as a reminder for Nigerians to pay closer attention to the history and circumstances surrounding apartments before moving in. He noted that the discovery came as a shock, especially because he had lived in the apartment for more than a year without any indication of the burial.
Mr Bachelor's story has sparked reactions online, highlighting the importance of thoroughly investigating property backgrounds. The family's promise to repair the sitting room suggests they intend to restore the space after removing the remains, though the tenant's trust in the arrangement remains uncertain.
