Chaos in Taipei's Shopping District

According to Premier Cho Jung-tai, the incident began when the attacker set off smoke bombs at Taipei's main train station. He then fled to a nearby subway station located in a bustling commercial area, attacking members of the public along his path. The Premier stated that the man, identified only by his surname Chang, appeared to have carried out indiscriminate attacks on the public.

Suspect's Background and Equipment

Authorities confirmed that the deceased suspect had a prior criminal record and there were outstanding warrants for his arrest. His residence had already been searched by police prior to the attack. Premier Cho told reporters that an investigation into his background and associations is underway to determine his motives.

Besides smoke grenades, the attacker was equipped with several dangerous items. Petrol bombs that seemed to have burned at the scene were likely in his possession. He was also reportedly wearing what looked like body armor and a mask during the assault.

Investigation and Aftermath

"We will investigate his background and associated relationships to understand his motives and determine if there are other connected factors," Premier Cho Jung-tai emphasized. The attack, which occurred on Friday, December 19, 2025, has sent shockwaves through the community, raising serious concerns about public safety and security in crowded urban areas. The focus now is on supporting the victims and their families while authorities piece together the full sequence of events.
