Three suspected phone thieves narrowly escaped being lynched by an angry mob in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State. The incident occurred near Zololo Junction on Monday, June 15, 2026, at about 12:20 p.m., according to eyewitnesses.
How the Incident Unfolded
The suspects, including a woman, were apprehended after a victim raised an alarm. Residents quickly mobilised and caught the alleged thieves. However, an angry mob soon gathered and attempted to lynch them. Vigilantes who rushed to the area intervened, saving the suspects from the mob. They were taken to the vigilantes' office before being handed over to the police.
Rising Phone Thefts in Tricycles
Residents at the scene expressed concern over the increasing number of phone thefts occurring in tricycles in recent days. Many commuters have reportedly lost their phones to thieves operating in the area.
Mr Isa Bello, a resident of Zololo, said, “Some persons suspected to be phone thieves were attacking people and collecting phones and money. Today, they were caught. We thank God for that.” He added that the suspects had been terrorising the area for some time, operating in the early mornings, afternoons, and late evenings, dispossessing residents of valuables such as phones, laptops, and cash.
