The Edo State Police Command has detained a popular TikTok content creator after she allegedly fabricated her own kidnapping to increase her social media following and engagement.
The Arrest and Confession
Osarobo Omoyemen, widely known online as Madam Oil Rice, was taken into custody over the weekend following an intensive police investigation. The 24-year-old Benin-based content creator reportedly admitted during interrogation that she staged the entire kidnapping incident purely to attract more attention to her TikTok profile.
According to police statements, the situation began when Omoyemen posted a video claiming she had been abducted along Upper Sakponba Road in Benin City. She further alleged that police officers later "rescued" her but detained her at Akpata Police Station and demanded ₦10,000 as bail money.
Police Investigation Reveals Truth
The Edo State Police Command immediately launched a thorough investigation into these serious claims. Their findings revealed a completely different story from what had been presented online.
Police Public Relations Officer CPS Moses Yamu confirmed that investigators discovered the TikToker had deleted an earlier video that showed an accomplice in the background urging viewers to follow her page. This crucial evidence exposed the true motive behind the false kidnapping alarm.
"The suspect admitted she staged the incident purely to generate content and attract more followers to her TikTok page," the police statement revealed.
Legal Consequences and Public Warning
Omoyemen has been formally charged to court on Thursday, November 20, 2025, facing consequences for her actions. Police authorities have confirmed that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend her accomplices so they can also face prosecution.
The police described such acts as dangerously misleading and capable of inciting public hostility against law enforcement while creating unnecessary tension within the state. They emphasized that spreading false information undermines genuine security efforts and wastes valuable police resources.
This arrest serves as a strong warning to others who might consider misusing social media platforms to create panic or disrupt public peace. The Edo State Police Command remains committed to maintaining order and will not tolerate actions that compromise public safety.
