Troops from Sector 4 of Operation Enduring Peace have recovered the decomposing body of a kidnapped community leader, Alhaji Lawal Abubakar Wakili of Kekong, during a search-and-rescue operation in Gashish District, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Discovery During Coordinated Search
Security sources revealed that the discovery was made at approximately 070930A on May 6, 2026, when troops, working alongside local residents, conducted a coordinated search within the fringes of Kurra and Jokko hills, as well as surrounding bush areas. The victim had been abducted earlier in Gashish, prompting sustained search operations by both military personnel and community members.
Tensions in the Community
Following the recovery of the body, tensions reportedly escalated in parts of the community. Aggrieved residents demanded the release of suspects who had been arrested earlier in connection with the kidnapping. Security sources said troops quickly brought the situation under control through engagement and assurances that due process and justice would be followed in handling the case.
Suspect Arrested
In a related development, one Chiroma Bello Abdulkarim, a 67-year-old resident of Ningon village in Gashish District, was arrested in connection with the kidnapping and killing of the victim. He is currently in custody undergoing investigation alongside other suspects linked to the incident.
Ongoing Investigation
Security operatives confirmed that calm has been restored in the area, while efforts are ongoing to track additional suspects believed to be connected to the crime. They added that the investigation is being intensified to uncover the circumstances surrounding the abduction and ensure that all those involved are brought to justice.
