A violent argument over a missing bunch of plantain has resulted in the tragic deaths of two middle-aged men in a Cross River State community, following a brutal machete duel.
How a Farm Dispute Turned Deadly
The fatal incident occurred in the Akpap-Okoyong community, located within the Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State. According to an eyewitness named Ettenma, the conflict began when a resident, Effiong, discovered that a bunch of plantain had been cut from his farm.
While expressing his anger publicly in the community, Effiong received information allegedly pointing to another man, Edet, as the culprit. It was claimed that Edet had been seen coming from the direction of the farm carrying plantain.
The Fatal Confrontation
The confrontation quickly escalated into extreme violence. Ettenma narrated that Effiong initiated the attack, using a machete he was carrying to inflict deep, severe wounds on Edet.
In a desperate bid to defend himself, the injured Edet grabbed another machete that was nearby and retaliated, striking back at Effiong. The exchange left both men with catastrophic injuries.
Failed Rescue and Community Mourning
Both critically wounded men were rushed to a nearby health centre in a bid to save their lives. However, hopes for their survival were dashed due to the lack of adequate medical facilities and equipment needed to manage such severe trauma. They were both confirmed dead.
The community of Akpap-Okoyong has been thrown into a state of mourning and shock. Residents are lamenting what they see as a disturbing increase in violent resolutions to minor disagreements, leading to unnecessary loss of life.
Police Launch Investigation
The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the incident. The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Irene Akata, stated that an investigation is actively ongoing to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the brutal event.
Akata noted that part of the probe will seek to understand why there was no timely intervention from other community members to prevent the violence from reaching such a fatal conclusion. The police spokesperson assured the public that further details would be provided once the investigation is complete.
