The Cross River State Police Command has arrested two men, 70-year-old Asuquo Effiom and 68-year-old Moris Monday, a shoemaker, in Calabar for reportedly attempting to rape a 12-year-old girl in their neighbourhood. The arrests were made on Sunday, August 23, 2026, following a report lodged by the victim’s father.
Police Confirm Arrest and Preliminary Findings
The command’s spokesperson, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, confirmed the incident in a statement, detailing that it occurred in the Thomas Henshaw area of Calabar. Akata explained that preliminary investigation indicates the victim alleged that Moris Monday, a shoe repairer, on two separate occasions, 13 and 14 August 2026, lured her into his room and attempted to sexually assault her.
“She further alleged that on 22 August 2026, Asuquo Effiom similarly lured her into his room and attempted to sexually assault her,” the PPRO said. Akata disclosed that police proceeded to the Hawkins Road area by Thomas Henshaw Junction, where the suspects were found in the custody of community members and were consequently taken into police custody.
Suspects Deny Allegations; Case Transferred to SCID
However, the suspects have denied the allegations, according to Akata. He stated that the victim had been referred to a government-approved medical facility for medical examination. “The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet investigation and necessary legal action,” he added.
“The Command assures the public that the matter will be handled professionally and in accordance with the law,” Akata said. He also assured that further developments will be made known as the investigation progresses. The community’s role in detaining the suspects highlights local vigilance in child protection cases, and the police have urged residents to continue cooperating with authorities.
