Two Suspects Arrested, Hideouts Dismantled in Ibadan Joint Security Raid
Two nabbed with narcotics in Ibadan security raid

A major joint security operation targeted criminal elements in Ibadan on Wednesday, resulting in the arrest of two individuals found in possession of suspected hard drugs.

Coordinated Clampdown on Criminal Havens

The raid, which took place in the Orita-Challenge area, was a coordinated effort spearheaded by Engr. Akeem Olatunji, the Executive Chairman of Oluyole Local Government. He was joined by the Divisional Police Officer for Orita-Challenge, CSP Mavis Jayeola. The operation was initiated in direct response to numerous petitions from distressed residents and community leaders concerning a surge in criminal activities, including robbery, assault, rape, and open drug dealing.

Engr. Olatunji emphasized that the government's move was necessary to restore public confidence. "We've received a lot of petitions from various communities about the nefarious activities happening here. As a responsible and responsive government, we had no choice but to move in and restore public confidence and peace," he stated.

Structures Dismantled and Suspects Apprehended

During the enforcement action, security forces dismantled several illegal and makeshift structures that had been serving as shelters for suspected criminals. It was revealed that occupants had previously been served a 30-day notice to vacate the area, a directive many chose to ignore.

While the two suspects caught with narcotic substances were taken into custody, others found at the scene were ordered to leave immediately and were sternly warned against any further acts that could threaten public peace. The council boss reaffirmed a zero-tolerance stance on crime, vowing that his administration would "leave no stone unturned" to protect lives and property across Oluyole.

Broad Security Collaboration and Community Response

The operation showcased extensive inter-agency collaboration, involving:

  • The Environmental and Security Taskforce
  • The Nigeria Police Force
  • Amotekun
  • Operation Burst
  • The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)

Authorities described this as part of a broader strategy to strengthen community safety. The arrested suspects are now in the custody of the Nigeria Police Force for investigation, with prosecution to follow upon its conclusion.

Chief Olayinka Banjo, Chairman of the local Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), praised the proactive approach, noting it was boosting residents' confidence. He also advised individuals without verifiable identity or legitimate livelihood who sleep by roadsides to seek formal accommodation.

In a separate development also on Wednesday, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, unveiled the "Grown in Oyo State" Quality Trademark at the 2025 Oyo State International Agribusiness Summit held at IITA, Ibadan. He described it as a major step to strengthen the state's agricultural identity and position Oyo as a leading agribusiness hub in West Africa.
