SC Villa captain David Owori has died after being attacked by suspected robbers near his home in Kampala, Uganda. The 27-year-old footballer succumbed to his injuries in hospital, sparking outrage and renewed calls to tackle violent crime.

Owori was reportedly attacked on Tuesday night in the Makindye area as he approached his residence. According to eyewitnesses, a group of suspected robbers ambushed him, hit him with paving stones, stole his belongings, and fled before help could arrive. He was rushed to a nearby medical centre and later transferred to a private hospital in Kampala, but died from his injuries.
Club and Federation Tributes
SC Villa confirmed the news, stating, "We have lost more than a player – we have lost a leader, brother and friend." Spokesperson Asan Kasingye said the attack happened just a short distance from Owori's home. The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (Fufa) described him as "not just a footballer" but "a leader and an inspiration to a generation." The Uganda Cranes also mourned his passing.
Career Highlights
Owori, nicknamed "Colgate," captained SC Villa and represented Uganda's national team. He returned to SC Villa in 2023 after playing in Europe and helped the club win its 17th Uganda Premier League title in 2024, ending a 20-year wait. His contract had been extended until 2027.
