A husband from Stockport, Greater Manchester, accused of drugging and sexually abusing his wife for more than two decades, is set to stand trial at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester, England, alongside 12 other men. The man, in his 60s, faces 48 charges dating back to 2004. His identity has been withheld by authorities to protect his wife's legal right to anonymity.
Guilty Pleas and Charges
While the husband initially denied all charges, prosecutors confirmed he has since entered guilty pleas to 15 counts. These include five counts of rape, six counts of assault by penetration, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of sharing intimate images of his wife without her consent. He maintains a not guilty plea for the remaining 33 counts.
A 13th defendant, 59-year-old Keith Fotheringham of Dundee, Scotland, separately pleaded guilty to assault by penetration, conspiracy to assault by penetration, conspiracy to rape, and conspiracy to administer a substance with intent. Fotheringham remains in custody awaiting sentencing at a later date.
Trial Delayed and Co-Defendants
The trial was initially slated to commence on Tuesday at Minshull Street Crown Court but was delayed to Wednesday due to unforeseen administrative circumstances. During preliminary hearings, prosecutors alleged that several co-defendants were invited to the couple's Stockport residence to carry out the acts.
The 12 co-defendants, aged between 28 and 73, hail from various parts of the UK and deny all charges. Among them is Jonathan Kirk, 43, a Stockport paramedic previously photographed meeting Prince Harry in 2011 following local emergency responses. Kirk faces charges of rape, conspiracy to rape, and conspiracy to assault by penetration.
Also on trial is Karl Lindsay, 55, a former football club chief executive charged with conspiracy to rape, conspiracy to assault by penetration, and conspiracy to administer a substance with intent. Other co-defendants facing trial include Mohammed Sabir (28), Philip Wild (58), Jordan Wallace (31), Alan Keelan (42), Robert Stewart (70), Sean Peers (38), Richard Townsend (37), Daniel Rayner (42), David Graves (59), and Graham Brougham (73).
Trial Duration and Next Steps
The trial at Minshull Street Crown Court is scheduled to last approximately 12 weeks. All 12 co-defendants deny the charges against them, and the court proceedings will determine the outcomes for the accused individuals.
