Bronwen James, a 30-year-old physical education teacher from Southampton, England, is facing potential jail time after prosecutors alleged she had a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student while the Wimbledon tennis tournament played on television. James, who worked at Bitterne Park School, has denied all allegations against her.
Allegations of Snapchat Contact and Flirtatious Messages
Prosecutors told the court that James and the teenage boy began communicating on Snapchat after she initially rejected his request for her account. Their messages reportedly became flirtatious, and the pair later met up, with prosecutors alleging that they kissed in a car before the relationship became sexual.
According to prosecutors, the two later met at James' home, where they watched television and Wimbledon before allegedly kissing and touching each other. The court heard that they allegedly went on to have unprotected sex.
Prosecutors Claim 'Miss' Was Preferred During Encounters
Prosecutors also claimed that James liked the student to call her "Miss" when they were alone together. The alleged victim reportedly said he initially believed the relationship was good but later came to realise that he had been groomed.
The case has drawn attention due to the circumstances involving the Wimbledon broadcast and the use of Snapchat, a platform known for disappearing messages.
Trial Delayed as New Jury Expected
The trial faced a delay after the jury was discharged, with a new jury expected to be sworn in as the case continues. James has denied the allegations and maintains her innocence.
