A visually impaired student at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has reportedly been expelled from his hostel after voicing concerns about the facility's deteriorating condition. The incident has sparked outrage among advocates for student welfare.
Student Sent Out for Speaking Out
Nnamdi Daniel, a student with visual impairment, was allegedly forced to vacate his hostel on Wednesday, according to Alex Onyia, CEO of Educare. Onyia disclosed the development on social media, expressing strong condemnation of the university's actions.
Onyia stated that the eviction order came from Professor Adibe Agbo, the Director of Housing and Accommodation at UNN. The student was reportedly punished for speaking out about the poor state of the hostel and the challenges he faces as a visually impaired student.
Response from Educare CEO
Onyia vowed to take action against what he described as 'evil' within the university system. He promised to secure better accommodation for Daniel and pledged to fight for the restoration of UNN's glory as Nigeria's first indigenous university.
In his statement, Onyia said: 'The blind student Nnamdi Daniel has been sent out of his hostel today by Prof Adibe Agbo who is the Director of housing and accommodation in UNN. He was sent out for speaking out about the state of the UNN hostel and what he is suffering as a visually impaired student. We will get him a much nicer place to stay. You see this evil in UNN, we will fight to dismantle it. Our students can't live like prisoners anymore.'
Call for Restoration of Standards
Onyia emphasized that UNN must become a model for universities across Africa, urging that its former glory be fully restored. The incident has reignited discussions about student accommodation conditions and treatment of students with disabilities in Nigerian universities.
