Wheelbarrow Pusher Fatally Stabs Trader in Port Harcourt Market Dispute

The Rivers State Police Command has officially confirmed a tragic murder incident that occurred early this morning, Saturday, February 14, at approximately 7:00 AM. The violent altercation took place at the bustling Fruit Market located in the Oil Mill area of Rumuokwurusi, Port Harcourt, sending shockwaves through the local community.

Details of the Fatal Confrontation

According to preliminary investigations conducted by the police, the incident began when a trader at the market attempted to create additional space for his displayed goods. In doing so, he requested that a wheelbarrow pusher, identified as Zakara Afaaruwu, a male individual, remove his wheelbarrow, which was obstructing the designated area. The request was met with a firm refusal, leading to a heated argument between the two parties.

During the escalating dispute, the situation turned violent. The wheelbarrow pusher allegedly produced a dagger and stabbed the trader, identified as Higightor Wenem, a 30-year-old male from Mbagel Village in the Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State. The attack resulted in severe injuries to the victim.

Immediate Aftermath and Police Response

The victim was swiftly rushed to the Military Hospital for urgent medical attention. However, despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was pronounced dead by the attending doctor. His body has since been deposited at the morgue for a comprehensive autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

The incident triggered significant tension and pandemonium in the area, particularly between members of the Hausa and Benue communities, who were present at the market. Fears of a broader communal clash arose, but prompt intervention by police operatives helped restore calm and prevent any further breakdown of law and order.

Official Statement from Police Authorities

Confirming the incident to newsmen, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, provided an update on the situation. She stated that the suspect, Zakara Afaaruwu, has been apprehended and is currently in police custody.
