A knife attacker stabbed a woman at the altar during mass at Holy Cross Church in Tramore, County Waterford, Ireland, on Tuesday morning. The victim, a woman in her 50s, was rushed to Waterford University Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Incident Details
According to the Irish Examiner, the assault occurred around 9:45 a.m. as mass was underway. The suspect, a man in his 30s, entered the church and accosted the woman before stabbing her on the altar. Police arrested him at a nearby domestic residence. It is not yet known if the victim and attacker knew each other.
Church and Community Response
The Diocese of Waterford & Lismore issued a statement expressing deep shock at the violent incident. 'Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured parishioner, and we pray for her full and speedy recovery,' the statement read. 'We ask the people of the Diocese to pray for the injured woman, for everyone affected by this distressing incident, and for the parish community of Holy Cross, Tramore.' The diocese also commended the courage of parishioners who assisted during the incident and thanked emergency personnel for their prompt response.
Police Investigation
Irish police (Gardaí) are appealing for witnesses or anyone with video footage to come forward. A Garda statement confirmed: 'A female, aged in her 50s, was conveyed to Waterford University Hospital for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Gardaí arrested a man, aged in his 30s, at a domestic residence located nearby. The male is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act in a garda station in Co Waterford. Gardaí seized a knife which will be technically examined.'
