Worker stabs supervisor over N10,000 debt in Rivers

A violent dispute over a payment of ten thousand Naira has led to a brutal stabbing and a subsequent arrest in Rivers State. A 35-year-old construction worker identified as Joshua is now in police custody after he allegedly attacked and stabbed his site supervisor, leaving the victim in a coma.

Heated Argument Over Payment Turns Violent

The incident, which occurred on December 6, 2025, along Obiri Ikwerre Road, stemmed from a financial disagreement. According to accounts from the victim and eyewitnesses, the supervisor, Sopiriala Sokari, had hired Joshua to transfer blocks at a construction site for an agreed sum of N20,000.

Upon job completion, Sokari offered to pay N10,000 upfront, promising the balance after confirming the work was done correctly. Joshua reportedly refused this partial payment and demanded the full amount immediately, sparking a confrontation.

Bottle Broken and Used as Weapon

The conflict escalated when Joshua later confronted Sokari at a spot where the supervisor was eating. Despite a bystander, a woman selling food, intervening and even offering the full N20,000 to defuse the situation, the attack proceeded.

"The next thing, he went and broke a bottle," Sokari recounted from his hospital bed. "The woman who was selling even had to bring out 20,000 naira after seeing his mood and gave it to him. After taking the money from the woman, he still used the bottle and stabbed me."

Victim Hospitalized, Calls for Justice

Sokari sustained severe injuries from the attack and was rushed to Cottage Solution Hospital in Mbodo Aluu, where he is currently receiving treatment. After regaining consciousness, he made a public appeal for help.

"Now I am lying down at Cottage Solution Hospital, Mbodo Aluu, where I was admitted," he said via telephone. "I am calling on Nigerians to help me. I have spent a lot of money. I need justice."

Police Confirm Arrest and Investigation

The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the development. Joshua was arrested and is being detained at the Boundary Police Division in Aluu, under the Ikwerre Local Government Area. Authorities have stated that an in-depth investigation into the matter is ongoing to ascertain all the facts surrounding the violent assault.

This case highlights the dangers of payment disputes escalating into physical violence, especially in informal work arrangements common in the construction sector.
